Collection: Luisa Abram

Wild cacao that grows freely along Amazon rivers, picked by riverside families, is what São Paulo chocolate maker Luisa Abram works with, from communities on the Juruá, Purus and Tocantins.

About Luisa Abram

Based in
São Paulo, Brazil
Known for
wild Amazon cacao chocolate

Luisa Abram makes chocolate in São Paulo from wild Amazon cacao: trees that grow on their own in the forest, without farming or clearing, and whose pods are gathered by families living along the rivers. The cacao comes from river communities such as the Juruá near Cruzeiro do Sul, the Purus near Boca do Acre and the Tocantins near Mocajuba.

Cacao from each river community tastes different.

Luisa Abram questions

What is wild cacao?

Most cacao comes from trees planted on farms. Wild cacao grows on its own in the Amazon forest, with no planting, cultivation or clearing of trees, and families living along the rivers gather the pods. Luisa Abram buys this cacao from river communities and turns it into chocolate itself in São Paulo.

Does Luisa Abram add flavorings to its chocolate?

No flavorings are added to shape the taste. Luisa Abram works bean to bar, starting from the raw cacao beans, so the flavor of each bar comes from three things: the forest where the wild cacao grew, how the beans were fermented after harvest, and how they were processed into chocolate. That is why cacao from different places tastes different.
