Rancho Gordo was founded in 2001 by Steve Sando in Napa, California, with a mission to preserve and promote heirloom bean varieties that were disappearing from American agriculture. What started as a small operation has become a phenomenon, with a Bean Club that has a years-long waitlist and a devoted following that treats bean drops like sneaker releases.

Rancho Gordo works directly with farmers in the US and Mexico to grow heritage bean varieties like Ayocote, Cranberry, and Rio Zape that you cannot find in any grocery store. Their beans are harvested annually (never sitting in warehouses for years like commodity beans), which means they cook faster, taste better, and have a creamy texture that old beans simply cannot achieve. They have almost singlehandedly revived American interest in cooking with dried beans.

The Ambrosian Pantry carries a curated selection of 25 Rancho Gordo products, including heirloom dried beans, grains, chiles, and Mexican pantry staples.
