About Ekone Oyster Co.
- Based in
- Bay Center, Washington
- Founded
- 1982
- Known for
- smoked Willapa Bay oysters
Ekone Oyster Co. started in 1982 by smoking and selling oysters, and it still works from Bay Center on the shore of Willapa Bay, on Washington's Pacific coast. The bay is an estuary where ocean water mixes with fresh water running down from the Willapa Hills. Taylor Shellfish Farms took over the company in 2017 and kept the Ekone brand.
Smoked oysters are the company's specialty, alongside other smoked seafood. The company also sells live oysters in the shell and fresh shucked oysters.
Ekone Oyster Co. questions
What is Willapa Bay, where Ekone works?
Willapa Bay is on Washington's Pacific coast, and Ekone works from the town of Bay Center on its shore. The bay is an estuary, a body of water where rivers meet the sea, so salt water mixes with fresh water running down from the Willapa Hills. Ekone calls it the most productive coastal ecosystem left in the continental United States.
What is a Pacific oyster?
The Pacific oyster is originally from Japan. The Washington State Department of Fisheries brought it to the state in the 1920s, and it is now one of the leading shellfish raised on farms along the US West Coast. Ekone's smoked oysters are made from Pacific oysters.
