Thanksgiving Gift Basket Ideas for the Host and the Day After

Published 5 min read

A Thanksgiving basket has a different job from a Christmas one. It is not a present to open under a tree. It goes to a host who has been cooking since Tuesday, to a family table you cannot sit at this year, or to a kitchen on Friday morning where the refrigerator is full of leftovers and nobody wants to cook again. Each of those wants a different basket, and none of them wants a ribbon-wrapped tower of things the recipient will never use.

Below are three baskets built for those three jobs, a table of what each costs at listed prices, the shipping calendar around Thursday, November 26, 2026, and the short list of what to leave out of any basket that has to travel.

What a Thanksgiving basket has to survive

A basket that arrives on Wednesday may not be opened until Saturday. It will share a counter with a turkey, a stack of pie plates and a refrigerator that has no room left. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service calls foods that can be stored safely at room temperature "shelf stable," and its examples include canned and bottled foods, spices and oils. That is the rule for every basket here: sealed jars, bottles, canisters, crackers and cookies, nothing that needs the refrigerator on arrival.

Basket one: for the host, for after

The host has every dish for Thursday already planned. A good host gift is for the days after, when the guests have gone: something for a slow breakfast and a quiet pot of tea.

  • Runamok's WhistlePig barrel-aged maple syrup, organic Vermont maple aged in WhistlePig rye whiskey barrels and a 2023 Good Food Award winner (shop Runamok barrel-aged maple syrup). It is the Friday pancake gift.
  • Mariage Frères Esprit de Noël, the Paris tea house's holiday black tea scented with mild Christmas spices and pieces of cinnamon, almond and apple, in a 100-gram canister (shop Mariage Frères Esprit de Noël). It is a pot for the quiet mornings after the guests leave.
  • A box of Rustic Bakery vanilla shortbread, a buttery cookie made with Madagascar vanilla bean (shop Rustic Bakery vanilla shortbread), for the teapot.

At listed prices the three come to $67. Hand it over at the door with a word that it is for the weekend, so it does not get opened into the middle of the meal. The pantry host gift guide sorts host gifts by the kind of host, for the dinners that come after this one.

Basket two: for the family table you cannot reach

This basket goes to the table the sender cannot sit at this year, and it has to arrive before Thursday. It should be easy to set out with no cooking, and it should go with whatever the household is already serving.

  • Rustic Bakery's sel gris flatbread, a sourdough cracker made with olive oil and grey sea salt from France, baked in Marin County, California (shop Rustic Bakery sel gris flatbread). It goes on the cheese board before dinner.
  • Dick Taylor's chocolate coated almonds: organic California almonds, roasted, then coated layer upon layer in the company's 65 percent Tanzania dark chocolate in traditional coating pans and dusted with cocoa (shop Dick Taylor chocolate coated almonds). A bowl for the table after pie.
  • Bee Squared Apiaries orange blossom honey, a medium-bodied varietal honey with a citrus flavor, from a Colorado-based apiary (shop Bee Squared orange blossom honey), for the cheese board and the morning toast.
  • A Ladyfingers Letterpress "Franks A Lot" thank-you card (shop the Franks A Lot card).

The four come to about $41.50. The card is the part that matters most to a family that is missing someone. The Emily Post Institute's advice on notes is that a handwritten note is warmer and more personal than a call or an email, and that it can be brief. Three lines about last year's table are enough.

Basket three: the day after

Friday is the day of the leftover sandwich, and the leftover sandwich is a condiment problem. This is the basket for the person who will be standing at the counter with cold turkey and half a loaf of bread.

The four come to about $58. For a different mustard on the sandwich, see the mustard collection.

The shipping calendar for Thanksgiving week

UPS publishes a holiday calendar for 2026. On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, it lists no UPS service of any kind outside its specialist critical-shipment service. On Friday, November 27, normal service resumes. In practice that means a basket meant for the table has to arrive by Wednesday, and planning for Tuesday leaves a day for a late truck. For a basket going far from Denver, ordering in the week of November 16 leaves room for ground transit. Products ship across the continental U.S. from theambrosianpantry.com.

If the basket is going somewhere warm, put the almonds in the middle of the box, away from the walls.

What to leave out

  • Anything that needs refrigeration on arrival. The refrigerator is full.
  • Wine or spirits, unless you know the household drinks.
  • Fresh flowers in a basket that ships. Send them separately or not at all.
  • A pie. The host has a pie.
