A rich combination of Indian, Arabian and East African roasting and grilling traditions, this versatile Tandoori blend works beautifully in rubs and marinades for anything roasted or grilled, as well as in curries and stews with chopped tomatoes or yogurt. We source our Tandoori blend from a cooperative of smallholder farmers on the Zanzibar islands off of the eastern coast of Tanzania. Many of these same families have been growing pepper and other spices (including our Cinnamon Verum, Pemba Cloves and Stone Nutmeg) for generations.
Burlap & Barrel sources this spice directly from the farmer who grew it, cutting out the middlemen who have controlled the spice trade for 4,000 years. Founded in 2016 by a former Michelin-starred chef (Ethan Frisch) and a serial entrepreneur (Ori Zohar), they pay farmers up to 20 times the commodity rate for spices this fresh and this flavorful.
