About Toschi
- Based in
- Savignano sul Panaro, Modena, Italy
- Founded
- 1945
- Known for
- Amarena cherries in syrup
Toschi began in 1945 with the cherries of Vignola, in Emilia-Romagna, when Giancarlo and Lanfranco Toschi turned their family's tradition of preserving fruit in spirit into industrial production. Cherries in spirit, distilled fruit and liqueurs came first, followed by the candied Amarena Toschi cherries and a first line of syrups. In 1959 Giancarlo laid the first stone of a plant at Savignano sul Panaro, in the province of Modena, which is still the company's headquarters. Nocino di Modena followed in 1969, and the third generation of the family took on management roles in 2022.
Italian fruit in syrup is spooned over gelato or panna cotta, folded into biscotti, panettone or cake batter, or dropped into an Old Fashioned or a Negroni.
Toschi questions
What are Amarena cherries?
Amarena cherries are a variety of sour cherry grown around Bologna and Modena, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. They are usually bottled in syrup and used to decorate rich chocolate desserts. Toschi, which began with cherries from the Vignola hills near Modena, is known for its own Amarena cherries in syrup.
What is nocino?
Nocino is a dark brown liqueur from Emilia-Romagna made from unripe green walnuts. By tradition the walnuts are picked around Saint John's Day, June 24, soaked in spirit and then removed, and the liquid is blended with sugar syrup. Toschi has made nocino since 1969, building on the family's start preserving fruit in spirit.
