About Row 7 Seed Co.

Based in
Hudson Valley, New York
Founded
2018
Known for
organic vegetable seeds bred for flavor, and tinned vegetables

Row 7 describes itself as an organic seed company built by chefs, farmers and plant breeders, and chef Dan Barber is one of its co-founders. Its argument is that breeders have long been asked to select for commodity traits at the expense of good food, and that better eating starts with the seed. Wherever possible its seed is produced and selected in organic systems with growers across the United States.

Chefs, farmers and breeders choose new vegetables together, and the test starts with what tastes good.

Row 7 also sells some of its vegetables in tins, grown by organic farmers and cooked by Row 7 chefs.

Row 7 Seed Co. questions

What does it mean to breed vegetables for flavor?

Breeding means choosing which plants to cross and save seed from, so the traits a breeder picks carry on into the next generation. A breeder can select for size, yield or how well a crop travels, or for taste. Row 7 makes taste the first test, and the chefs and farmers it works with help judge which new vegetables are worth keeping.

Who started Row 7 Seed Co.?

Row 7 launched in 2018 with chef Dan Barber; Michael Mazourek, a plant breeder and professor at Cornell University; and Matthew Goldfarb, a seed producer who oversees growing and distributing the seed. Among its early varieties were a tiny squash with an intense natural sweetness and a golf-ball-sized potato that tastes creamy and nutty.
