- black sesame butter and Chinese American spreads
Ashley Xie and Hedy Yu are Chinese American childhood friends who grew up on PB&Js and homemade dumplings in equal measure. In college they craved flavors from home that they could not find. Rooted Fare, launched in 2020, is their answer: modern Chinese American pantry staples.
The flagship, a black sesame butter, grew out of a family tradition of making tang yuan, the glutinous rice balls filled with sweet black sesame paste.
Rooted Fare questions
What is tang yuan?
Tang yuan are glutinous rice balls, and a classic version is filled with sweet black sesame paste. Rooted Fare grew out of a family tradition of making them: co-founder Ashley Xie turned the black sesame filling into a spread, which became the brand's flagship Black Sesame Crunchy Butter.
What goes into Rooted Fare's black sesame butter?
Rooted Fare makes its black sesame butter from freshly roasted, stone-ground black sesame seeds. The founders, Chinese American childhood best friends, grew up on PB&Js and homemade dumplings in equal parts, and the brand adapts Chinese flavors for the modern American pantry.
