About Pommery

Based in
Meaux region, France
Known for
Moutarde de Meaux mustard and vinegar

Mustard factories were already working around Meaux by the 18th century, and the secret of the town's mustard is said to have passed from the canons of Meaux to J.B. Pommery, who also ran a millstone quarry. By 1890 the Pommery family was the only mustard maker left in the town.

Manufacturing left the family in 1925. The mustard is now made by Les Assaisonnements Briards, which has kept the original process. The vinegar side traces to Les Vinaigreries du Lion, founded in Lagny-sur-Marne in 1865, whose vinegar went into Pommery mustard for decades.

Pommery still sells vinegars under its own name, keeping Meaux's two old crafts together.
