Oliver Pluff & Co. began in 2009, selling hand-packed tea blends online and to wholesale customers. Darren Hartford, who spent 28 years in the Air Force, bought the company in 2018 and blends the teas himself. Its first shop is at 49 John Street in downtown Charleston, and packing happens at a warehouse in West Ashley.
The company focuses on what early Americans drank. Research into British East India Company records led it to recreate the teas dumped into Boston Harbor in 1773.
There was never a real Oliver Pluff. Oliver was picked because it sounds British, and pluff is the Lowcountry word for the soft mud left when the tide goes out. Beyond tea, the company blends mixes for toddies and other spiced drinks.

Oliver Pluff traced the teas thrown into Boston Harbor in 1773 through British East India Company records, and the names it found include Bohea, Congou and Singlo. The company has recreated these historic blends from what it found in those records.
What is a hot toddy?
A toddy is a usually hot drink of liquor (a strong alcoholic drink) such as rum, mixed with water, sugar and spices. Oliver Pluff counts toddies among the colonial-era drinks it recreates, with hot toddy blends for cold weather and newer summer toddy mixes, one inspired by hibiscus, made to be drunk cold.
