About Ocelot

Based in
Dundee, Scotland
Founded

Known for
organic flavored chocolate bars with illustrated wrappers

Matt and Ish Broadbent started Ocelot at their kitchen table in Edinburgh in 2013, after a stretch of cooking their way around Europe. Ish trained in illustration and does the design. The chocolate is now made by a small team in a micro factory in Dundee, where it is melted, flavored and tempered, poured into moulds, and each bar is packaged by hand.

Everything is certified organic, sweetened with unrefined cane sugar and made without emulsifiers or preservatives. The cacao comes from Original Beans, Ocelot's sister company and supplier, whose team is based in Amsterdam. Original Beans works with native cacao grown in regenerative rainforest.

The company is known for flavored chocolate, pairing it with fruit and other ingredients.

Ocelot questions

What is regenerative cacao?

Ocelot uses the term for cacao from its sister company Original Beans, which sources native cacao varieties from regenerative rainforest, meaning cacao grown in a way that protects and restores forest rather than clearing it. Original Beans lists protecting forests, growing trees and supporting farmers among its aims and describes its cacao as climate positive.

Is Ocelot chocolate organic?

Yes. All Ocelot chocolate is certified organic and sweetened with unrefined cane sugar, and it is made without emulsifiers or preservatives. Many chocolate makers add soy lecithin, a fat taken from soybeans that is classed as an emulsifier (an ingredient that helps oil and water blend), mainly to make melted chocolate flow more easily. Ocelot leaves it out.
