The packaging is a large part of the brand. Designer Luis Mendonça has led its design and art direction from the start, and the company works with more than 50 illustrators. The boxes are made from recycled material.

José Gourmet sees itself as a link between careful producers and the people who eat their food. It selects handmade foods whose quality comes from careful manufacturing and good ingredients, and it says producers who work with commitment deserve a fair return. The José in its name comes from a Hebrew root meaning one who adds.

Is tinned fish already cooked?

Yes. Canned fish is sealed in the can and then heated under pressure above the boiling point of water until it is commercially sterile, so it is ready to eat straight from the tin. Some fish are steamed or smoked before canning, while sardines in oil are often packed raw and cook in the can.
