Besides greeting cards, the studio takes on other letterpress work, including custom prints. Brewer, who has a background in the outdoor industry and public relations, says she loves good words and all elements of the outside world.

Ice Pond Press questions

What is letterpress printing?

Letterpress is a printing method in which a raised surface, such as type or a plate made from light-sensitive plastic, is inked and pressed directly onto paper. It was first done on platen presses, where the paper is pressed against the flat, inked type by another flat surface. Ice Pond Press prints its greeting cards and custom prints this way in its studio in Bozeman, Montana.

What is a Chandler & Price press?

Chandler & Price is a press maker formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1886 by mechanic William T. Price and investor Harrison T. Chandler, and its presses were based on an older design, the Gordon Franklin. Molly Douma Brewer says Ice Pond Press came to be when she showed up with an enormous Chandler & Price letterpress. She spends her days printing, setting up to print, designing and reviewing paper sizes and stocks.
