About Ghost Academy

Based in
Long Beach, California
Founded

Known for
hand block printed greeting cards with dark humor

Ghost Academy has been selling cards since 2008. It began with every card block printed by hand in a tiny apartment kitchen, and the studio still prints by hand, press free, with a few simple tools. Orders are packed by hand too.

The humor is the draw, and some cards are sharp enough that you will want to know the recipient well. Keep one in the drawer for the friend who would rather laugh than tear up, or tuck one in with a gift so the card gets read before the wrapping comes off.

Ghost Academy questions

What is block printing?

Block printing is a kind of relief printing: a design is carved into a block so that only the raised parts hold ink. The inked block is then pressed against paper, transferring the image one card at a time. Ghost Academy has printed its cards this way since 2008, when every card was block printed by hand in a tiny apartment kitchen.

What does press free mean for Ghost Academy cards?

Most printed cards come off a machine press. Letterpress, for example, uses a machine to push paper against inked raised type or a plate, often hard enough to leave a slight dent you can feel. Press free means no machine does that work: Ghost Academy still prints by hand with a few simple tools, and packs its orders by hand too.
