About Fellow

San Francisco, California
Founded
2013
Known for
gooseneck kettles and coffee and tea brewing gear

Jake Miller started Fellow in 2013, and its first product, the Duo Coffee Steeper, came out of classes he took at the Stanford School of Engineering. The company's stated aim was to bring the cafe experience home without clunky equipment. The Duo went through countless prototypes and reached production through Kickstarter. Kettles, grinders, brewers and mugs followed, all designed in San Francisco.

Gooseneck kettles, one of the company's best-known designs, have a narrow spout that pours in a slow, controlled stream, which is what pour-over coffee needs.

Fellow questions

Why does water temperature matter for coffee and tea?

The National Coffee Association puts the ideal water temperature for pour-over coffee at about 93°C, give or take 3 degrees, or roughly 195 to 205°F. Tea is sensitive too: Fellow notes that water that is too hot will scorch green tea leaves. That is why temperature-control kettles, a Fellow specialty, let you set an exact temperature instead of just bringing water to a boil.

What is matcha?

Matcha is a powdered green tea made from shade-grown tea plants: the leaves are steamed, stripped of their veins and ground in stone mills into a fine powder. Instead of steeping leaves and throwing them out, you whisk the powder into hot water with a bamboo whisk and drink all of it. Alongside its coffee gear, Fellow also designs tools for preparing matcha, part of its aim of bringing the cafe experience home.
