- France
- Founded

- Known for
- imported spices, including Kampot pepper
Comptoir & Co. dates its history to 1971, when the business began importing tropical fruits and vegetables into France. Spices came later, and in the 2000s the company went looking for new and rare spices and built ties with local growers.
The company says its aim is to make spices easier to use in everyday cooking, and it designs its packaging with that in mind, including a grinder top of its own that fits all of its jars.
Comptoir & Co. questions
Are pink peppercorns real pepper?
No. Pink peppercorns are dried berries from trees such as the Peruvian and Brazilian peppertrees, and they are not related to Piper nigrum, the vine that gives black and white pepper. They take the name from their peppercorn look and peppery flavor. Comptoir & Co. says it may have been the company that first brought the pink berry of Réunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, to France.
Do black, white and red pepper come from different plants?
No. All the colors come from the same vine, Piper nigrum; the difference is when the berries are picked and how they are processed. Black pepper is picked unripe, briefly scalded and dried until the skin darkens. White pepper is the ripe berry with its outer skin soaked off, which removes much of the aroma, and red pepper is left on the vine until fully ripe.
