About Cacao Hunters

Based in
Colombia
Known for
single-region Colombian fine chocolate

Cacao Hunters makes fine chocolate from Colombian cacao, working origin by origin with small producers in nine regions of the country and buying directly from more than a thousand farming families. The aim is long-term relationships with the communities that grow the beans.

One of its regions, Tumaco, sits in Nariño, in dense, rainy forest along the Pacific, and its people carry an Afro-Indigenous heritage. In a region where illegal crops put pressure on families, cacao has become a solid legal livelihood.

The chocolate is made region by region. Let a square melt slowly on the tongue, and compare origins side by side.

Cacao Hunters questions

Who founded Cacao Hunters?

Carlos Ignacio Velasco and Mayumi Ogata launched the company in 2013, and it works out of Popayán, in southwestern Colombia. Its aim is to find, protect and promote heirloom varieties of cacao, the older native types grown in Indigenous and post-conflict regions of the country. It also helps farmers improve how they grow cacao and how they sell it.

What does the percentage on a Cacao Hunters bar mean?

The percentage is the share of the bar that comes from the cacao bean, with cocoa mass and cocoa butter counted together. Most of the rest is sugar, plus milk in a milk chocolate. EU and UK rules set a minimum of 25% cocoa solids for milk chocolate, and a higher number leaves less room for sugar and gives a deeper chocolate flavor.
