About Boulder Tea Company
- Based in
- Boulder, Colorado
- Known for
- the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse's loose leaf teas and chai
The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse was a gift to the city of Boulder from its sister city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Today it is a full-service teahouse and restaurant pouring more than 100 loose leaf teas, and The Boulder Tea Company is its retail and online tea store, with a shop at 1770 13th Street.
The teahouse's own chai, made in small batches, has been a Boulder staple for more than 25 years, and the tea company sells it alongside the loose leaf teas poured at the teahouse.
Boulder Tea Company questions
How did a teahouse from Tajikistan end up in Boulder?
Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan in Central Asia, became Boulder's sister city in 1987, a pairing meant to build friendship between the two towns. As a gift, forty Tajik artisans made the teahouse by hand over two years, and it was shipped to Boulder in about 200 crates. It opened in 1998, and The Boulder Tea Company is its tea shop.
What is chai?
Chai simply means tea in most Indian languages. What American cafes call chai is masala chai, black tea brewed with milk, sugar and warming spices such as cardamom, ginger and cinnamon. The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse has served its own small-batch version for more than 25 years.
