BonBon began in 2017 with three friends, Robert Persson, Leonard Schaltz and Selim Adira, who had moved to the US from Sweden and set out to shake up the US candy world. The first New York shop opened in 2018, and more followed in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Most of what BonBon sells is imported from Sweden, with some from other Nordic countries. In 2023 the company launched five original flavors of its own fish candy.

Some of the candy carries characters from Nordic storybooks. Pour a few kinds into one bowl and let everyone pick.

Is BonBon candy made in Sweden?

Mostly. The majority of what BonBon sells is imported from Sweden, with some from other Nordic countries. Co-founder Leonard Schaltz has said Swedish candy has different textures and more intense flavors than what Americans are used to, and many of BonBon's candies are gelatin-free.

What is lördagsgodis, the Swedish candy custom?

Lördagsgodis is Swedish for Saturday candy, a custom many Swedes keep of eating candy on Saturdays. In Sweden many children spend Saturdays at pick-and-mix candy stores, filling a bag with loose candy of their choosing. BonBon's three founders moved to New York from Sweden, and their shops sell Swedish and Nordic candy in that same mix-and-match style.
