Prohibition-inspired spirit-free canned cocktails

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Rebecca Styn's Room 33 Speakeasy in Erie, Pennsylvania, could only offer alcohol-free drinks to go. Her team turned that into Blind Tiger, a line of ready-to-drink spirit-free cocktails modeled on the classics of the 1920s and 1930s.

The name comes from Prohibition, when speakeasies displayed stuffed tigers to signal that alcohol was available after hours. The drinks are pasteurized and use natural ingredients to supply the depth that a spirit would normally give.

Drink them cold from the can, pour them over ice with a citrus wedge, or use them as mixers.

Blind Tiger questions

Do Blind Tiger cocktails contain alcohol?

No. Blind Tiger makes spirit-free, zero-proof versions of classic cocktails, meaning the drinks are made without any liquor. In place of a spirit, it uses natural ingredients to supply the depth a spirit would normally give. The drinks are also pasteurized, briefly heated to kill microbes, before they are sealed.

What was Prohibition, the era behind Blind Tiger?

Prohibition was the period from 1920 to 1933 when the United States banned making, importing, transporting and selling alcohol. Drinking moved into hidden bars called speakeasies. Blind Tiger, which grew out of a modern speakeasy in Erie, Pennsylvania, models its canned drinks on the classic cocktails of that era and the decade after, keeping their flavors without the spirit.
