Portuguese fruit preserves and lemon curd

Beirabaga is the preserves line of Euromel, a family company at Quinta dos Pocinhos in Penamacor, near the Serra da Malcata nature reserve in central Portugal. Euromel began with honey, sold under the Serramel name, and later added fruit preserves made to traditional recipes. The company says the preserves are made without colorants or preservatives.

Spoon the preserves over yogurt, fill a tart or sponge cake, or spread them on scones.

Beirabaga questions

What does made without colorants or preservatives mean for Beirabaga preserves?

A colorant is an added dye that brightens or changes the color of a food, and a preservative is an additive that slows spoilage. Euromel, the family honey company in Penamacor behind Beirabaga, says its preserves are made to traditional recipes without either. In a preserve made this way, the color comes from the fruit itself, and the label is the best guide to what is inside.

What is the Serra da Malcata?

The Serra da Malcata is a hill range in central Portugal, between the Castelo Branco and Guarda districts. A nature reserve was created there in 1981 to protect the Iberian lynx populations then living in it, and the species has since been reintroduced. Euromel, the family company behind Beirabaga, works near the reserve and sells its honey from the area as Serramel.
