About AeroPress

Based in
Palo Alto, California (where it was invented)
Founded
2005
Known for
the AeroPress single-cup coffee press

Alan Adler started work on a better single-cup brewer in his garage in Palo Alto, California. After two years and more than 30 prototypes he settled on a design, and the AeroPress was introduced at Coffee Fest in Seattle in November 2005. Adler was already known for the Aerobie flying ring. The company, once called Aerobie, Inc., now trades as AeroPress, Inc.

The method is simple. Ground coffee steeps with hot water in the chamber, where most of the extraction happens, then pressing the plunger builds air pressure that speeds the brew through a paper micro-filter.

AeroPress questions

Who owns AeroPress today?

Alan Adler first sold the AeroPress through his own company, Aerobie, Inc., which also made his flying ring. The coffee company now trades as AeroPress, Inc., and the Aerobie name is a trademark of Spin Master Ltd. In summer 2021 AeroPress was acquired by Tiny Ltd., a company co-founded by Chris Sparling and Andrew Wilkinson.

What is the World AeroPress Championship?

It is an international coffee brewing contest run from Melbourne, Australia, by an independent, grass-roots organization. Competitors brew AeroPress coffee to their own recipes to find out whose makes the best cup. The first one was held in Oslo, Norway, in 2008 with three competitors; today national championships take place in more than 60 countries.
