Stocking Stuffers for Adults Who Cook, Pour and Snack
A child's stocking is mostly about surprise. An adult's is about use. The gifts remembered from a grown-up stocking are the small ones still on the counter by New Year's: the tin of sardines eaten on bread the week after, the bar of chocolate broken up on Boxing Day, the slide tin of salt that goes into a coat pocket and stays there. Good stocking stuffers for adults are small, sealed, a little better than what the person buys for themselves, and gone by spring.
Below are eleven of them, sorted by who is opening the stocking, each with its listed size and price. A table groups them by price, and the last section sets the packing order, heaviest in the toe.
The rule: it has to keep on the mantel
A stocking can be filled days before it is opened and then hang near a fireplace or a heating vent until morning. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service calls foods that can be stored safely at room temperature "shelf stable," and its examples include canned and bottled foods, spices and oils. Tins, bottles and spices are on the FSIS list; anything labeled "Keep Refrigerated" belongs in the fridge, not the stocking. FSIS advises keeping shelf-stable foods in a cool, dry place below 85°F, so chocolate is better tucked in at the last minute, away from the fire side of the stocking.
For the cook
Cooks already own the big things. The stocking is for the spice they have been meaning to try and the salt they would not buy for themselves.
- Burlap & Barrel's Spice Passports, a travel pack of eight sample pods of the spice company's bestsellers, made to fit in a pocket (shop Burlap & Barrel Spice Passports). A cook can work through the eight in the weeks after the holiday and decide which ones earn a full jar. The Burlap & Barrel complete guide tells the company's story.
- Jacobsen Salt Co.'s infused salt slide tin collection, five infused salts and Pure Flake salt in small sliding tins meant for picnics, camping and lunch on the go (shop the Jacobsen slide tin collection). Split the set across two stockings, or give all six to one cook.
- A tin of José Gourmet sardines in extra virgin olive oil, 125 grams (shop José Gourmet sardines). The tin lies flat in the toe of a stocking, and the sardines can be eaten straight from the tin or on crusty bread. The guide to serving sardines straight from the tin covers what to do with it.
For the bar and the teapot
The home bartender and the tea drinker both use small things a little at a time, which makes them easy people to fill a stocking for.
- Fee Brothers Old Fashion aromatic bitters, a 5-ounce bottle from a company that has made cocktail bitters in Rochester, New York, since 1864 (shop Fee Brothers Old Fashion bitters). The cocktail bitters complete guide explains how a few dashes change a drink.
- A 100-gram canister of Mariage Frères Marco Polo, a scented black tea, fruity and floral with a velvety character (shop Mariage Frères Marco Polo). The sealed black canister can go in the toe. The Marco Polo tea guide has the brewing numbers.
- Savannah Bee Company's acacia honey straws, thirty straws of acacia honey from Hungary to a pack (shop Savannah Bee acacia honey straws). A handful goes into one stocking and the rest of the pack into the next.
For the sweet tooth
The adult version of stocking candy has a maker and a place behind it.
- A Dick Taylor brown butter bar: 73 percent Northerner Blend dark chocolate infused with browned Humboldt Creamery butter, finished by hand with roasted cacao nibs and sea salt (shop the Dick Taylor brown butter bar).
- Les Anis de Flavigny rose pastilles in the 50-gram oval tin (shop Anis de Flavigny rose pastilles). The candies start as a single aniseed coated in layer after layer of flavored sugar syrup. The candies trace their history at Flavigny to 1591, and they are still made today in the former Abbey of Flavigny, in the Burgundy village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain. The Les Anis de Flavigny producer guide tells the abbey's story.
- Pastiglie Leone's orange pastilles, 0.95 ounces, from the Candy Originals line the company calls its oldest and most distinctive confectionery (shop Leone orange pastilles). Leone dates its start to 1857, in an osteria at Neive in Piedmont; the Pastiglie Leone producer guide has the history.
- A handful of Venchi pistachio gianduiotti, sold one at a time: the classic Piedmont gianduiotto shape, filled here with white chocolate, 25 percent pistachio paste and a touch of salt (shop Venchi pistachio gianduiotti). Five of them fill the gaps between bigger things.
For everyone: the small thing that is not food
A Savannah Bee Company beeswax and propolis lip balm, softened with coconut, olive, cocoa and hemp seed oils, costs a few dollars and suits cold weather (shop Savannah Bee peach lip balm).

How to fill a stocking
- Put the heaviest, most solid thing in the toe: the tea canister, the tin of sardines or the bottle of bitters, lying flat.
- Add the smaller tins and packs next: the pastilles and the slide tins.
- Slide the chocolate bar in flat against the side that will face away from any heat.
- Drop the small loose pieces, the gianduiotti and the honey straws, into the gaps.
- Leave the lip balm or one bright small pack at the top, where a hand finds it first.
Stockings that have to travel before they are hung go flat in a box, chocolate on top. Products ship across the continental U.S. from theambrosianpantry.com. For gifts that will wait under a tree for a week or more, the guide to Christmas food gifts that travel well sorts foods by how well they keep, and the fine food gift guide sorted by budget covers the presents too big for a stocking.
Short answers
What are good stocking stuffers for adults? Small things that keep at room temperature and get used: a tin of fish, a chocolate bar, a tin of pastilles, a small bottle of bitters, a pack of spices, a canister of tea.
How much should an adult stocking cost? There is no rule. Four or five small things at $5 to $15 each come to roughly $20 to $75; the sample stocking above comes to about $34.
Can chocolate go in a stocking hung by a fireplace? Yes, if it goes in on the last evening and sits on the side away from the heat. Bars are flat and fit against the stocking wall.
