Peking Handicraft was founded in 1977 as a small importing company dealing in soft tabletop goods such as doilies and gift items such as needlepoint pillows and hooked rugs. Peking Handicraft questions
What is a hooked pillow?
A hooked pillow is made the way a hooked rug is: strips of material are drawn through a woven foundation fabric, and the strips build up the picture. Hooked rugs were among the goods Peking Handicraft imported from its start in 1977, and by 2002 it owned a hooked rug factory in China.
What is needlepoint?
Needlepoint is a type of embroidery, called canvas work until the early 19th century, in which wool or silk yarn is stitched over a canvas foundation of linen or cotton. There are more than 150 needlepoint stitches. Needlepoint as it is known today began in the 17th century, when embroidered upholstery led to a sturdier canvas foundation. Needlepoint pillows were among Peking Handicraft's first goods, and the company later came to own a needlepoint factory of its own in China.
