Kaweco's story begins in 1883 in Heidelberg, Germany, when Carl Luce and Friedrich Ensslen founded the Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik (Heidelberg Dip Pen Factory). In 1889, Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber took over and created the Kaweco brand name from their initials: Koch, Weber & Compagnie. By 1911, Kaweco had introduced the iconic Sport pocket fountain pen ("small in the pocket, great in the hand") and opened subsidiaries in Berlin, Paris, Zurich, and Vienna. In 1914, they acquired their American gold nib supplier, A. Morton & Co. of New York, and brought the equipment and expertise to Heidelberg.
After surviving two World Wars, bankruptcy, and decades of dormancy, the Kaweco brand was revived in 1994 by Michael Gutberlet, a collector who fell in love with the original Sport design. Today, Kaweco pens are manufactured in Germany and sold in over 50 countries. The Sport remains one of the most popular pocket fountain pens in the world, praised by The New York Times for its "precision, modesty, clarity, and minimal fuss." Kaweco produces fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoints, and mechanical pencils, all built on over 140 years of German writing instrument heritage.
