Nil Rouge Tea Guide: Mariage Frères' Citrus & Spice Rooibos
Nil Rouge is easier to understand once you set aside the phrase "red tea." It is not black, green or white tea at all. Its base is rooibos, the South African infusion made from Aspalathus linearis, and Mariage Frères scents it with citrus and spice.
That matters for two reasons. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free rather than decaffeinated, and Nil Rouge belongs to a small family inside the Mariage Frères range: it is the rooibos counterpart to Thé sur le Nil, the house's citrus-and-spice green tea.
What is Nil Rouge?
Mariage Frères describes Nil Rouge as a red tea, naturally theine-free, fruity and lemony, with scents of citrus, Oriental spices and marigold, and a taste it calls lively yet mild. The loose rooibos lists red rooibos tea and aroma, with a note that it may contain traces of nuts. The 100-gram Icon canister lists red rooibos tea, marigold and aroma.
For an ingredient question, the label on the format in hand is the one to go by.
Rooibos is not tea with the caffeine removed
True tea comes from Camellia sinensis. Rooibos comes from Aspalathus linearis, a different plant altogether, and the South African Rooibos Council describes it as naturally caffeine-free.
Decaffeinated tea starts as a tea leaf that contains caffeine and goes through a process to remove most of it. Rooibos never needs that step.
The ingredient has a protected geography too. Since 2021, "Rooibos" and "Red Bush" have been registered in the European Union as a Protected Designation of Origin, covering named municipalities in South Africa's Western Cape and the Hantam municipality in the Northern Cape.
Why the name Nil Rouge?
Mariage Frères says Nil Rouge extends a voyage begun with Thé sur le Nil. That tea is a green tea scented with citrus fruit and refined spices. Nil Rouge carries the same aromatic idea over to rooibos.
How Mariage Frères says to brew Nil Rouge
- 2.5 grams of rooibos
- 200 milliliters of water
- 95°C / 203°F
- 5 minutes
The cotton-muslin version uses one sachet per 200 milliliters at the same temperature and steep time.
Nil Rouge or Thé sur le Nil?
Thé sur le Nil (shop Thé sur le Nil) uses green tea, so it is a true tea. Nil Rouge uses rooibos. Both sit in the citrus-and-spice family, and Mariage Frères links them directly.
Choose Thé sur le Nil for that aromatic direction over green tea. Choose Nil Rouge for the rooibos version and a naturally caffeine-free cup.
Nil Rouge or Marco Polo Rouge?
Both are rooibos blends. Marco Polo Rouge (shop Marco Polo Rouge) carries the fruit-and-flower world of Marco Polo onto rooibos. Nil Rouge is citrus and spice.
Who Nil Rouge suits
Nil Rouge makes sense for someone who wants an aromatic Mariage Frères blend on a base other than tea, and a cup that stays caffeine-free at any hour.
Where it sits in the range
Wedding Impérial (Wedding Impérial tea guide) brings malt, chocolate and caramel. Boléro (Boléro tea guide) moves toward peach, apricot and fig. Thé sur le Nil puts citrus and spice over green tea. Nil Rouge keeps the citrus and spice and swaps the tea for rooibos, which makes it a clear demonstration of how much the base changes a cup.
