Cookie Gift Box: What to Bake and How to Pack It

Published 5 min read

A cookie gift box is a promise that the cookies will taste as good when the lid comes off as they did on the cooling rack. Three things keep that promise: cookies sturdy enough to travel, a box packed so nothing moves, and a plan for how long the cookies will sit before they are eaten. This guide covers what to bake, what to buy to fill the gaps, how to pack the box, and how long baked cookies keep.

Which cookies to bake for a gift box

FedEx's guide to shipping cookies names drop cookies and biscotti as cookies that travel well, along with brownies and bars. It says frosted cookies need extra care and suggests freezing them first. The pattern is simple: firm, flat and dry cookies hold their shape, while soft, tall or iced cookies break, smear or stick together.

  • Biscotti. Twice baked, so they start out firm and dry. The almond biscotti recipe in the Pantry Kitchen walks through the two bakes.
  • Brownies and bars. Cut them into squares once they have cooled, and they stack in layers. The cocoa brownie recipe is written with the adjustments for baking at Denver's altitude.
  • Drop cookies. A plain drop cookie without a glaze packs flat in a row.
  • Iced or sandwich cookies. Keep them for a box that is handed over in person, or freeze them first as FedEx suggests before mailing.

Bought cookies to fill the box

A box can mix home baking with a few bought cookies. They add flavors you may not bake yourself, and they come sealed, so they can go in last.

  • Makabi & Sons shortbread. Makabi & Sons describes itself as a small-batch bakery making shortbread butter cookies in flavors drawn from around the world, six cookies to a 3.6 oz box. Kriti is rosemary with Maldon sea salt (shop Makabi & Sons Kriti, $8.00). Oxford is vanilla with Earl Grey tea (shop Makabi & Sons Oxford, $6.50). Capri is lemon oil with poppy seeds, and its listing gives a minimum shelf life of four months (shop Makabi & Sons Capri, $8.00). Oaxaca is cocoa, cinnamon and a hint of cayenne (shop Makabi & Sons Oaxaca, $8.00). Uji is matcha with toasted black sesame (shop Makabi & Sons Uji, $8.00).
  • Loison Dolci Pensieri. A gift box of 16 individually wrapped all-butter shortbread cookies, four each of pear, citron, chamomile and black cherry (shop Loison Dolci Pensieri, $20.00). Because each cookie is wrapped on its own, they can fill the gaps between rows of home-baked cookies.

Choosing the box

A rigid box with a lid protects cookies better than a bag or a basket. FedEx suggests a bakery box, tin or other rigid container that will hold up in transit. Two sizes suit cookies: an 8-inch square and a 14-inch rectangle.

The 8-inch square box takes about three rows of biscotti or two layers of brownie squares. The 14-inch box takes a full assortment with the bought cookies laid along one side.

How to pack a cookie gift box

These steps follow FedEx's own packing advice for cookies, with one addition for a box given by hand.

  1. Cool the cookies completely. FedEx says a full cool-down reduces moisture buildup during shipping. Warm cookies steam inside a closed box and go soft.
  2. Sort by flavor and texture. Keep crisp cookies away from soft ones, and strong flavors such as cayenne or Earl Grey away from plain butter cookies. FedEx suggests wrapping each cookie on its own in a food-safe bag, plastic wrap or parchment.
  3. Use partitions. FedEx advises a partition so the cookies do not touch. Folded parchment between rows works in a gift box.
  4. Pack tight. Fill the gaps with wrapped bought cookies so nothing slides, then give the box a gentle shake. If anything moves, add more.
  5. For mailing, box the box. FedEx says to put the cookie container inside a larger corrugated box with 2 to 3 inches of cushioning on all sides, to choose an overnight or two-day service, and to ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid weekend delays.

For a box handed over in person, step five is not needed. Tie the lid with twine and add a card that lists the cookies and the day they were baked.

How long a cookie gift box keeps

Colorado State University Extension's food storage chart gives baked cookies 2 to 3 weeks in the refrigerator and 6 to 12 months in the freezer. It gives cookie dough 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and 3 months in the freezer. That makes the freezer the baker's friend in December: bake early, freeze the cookies in a sealed container, and pack the box the day it goes out.

Bought cookies follow the date on their own package. Write the bake date on the card for the home-baked ones, so the person opening the box knows which to eat first.

Three cookie gift boxes

Box What goes in Listed price of the bought items
The small square Red magnetic box, Makabi & Sons Kriti and Oxford, plus a row of home-baked biscotti $24.50
The snowflake box Snowflake gift box, Loison Dolci Pensieri, plus a layer of home-baked brownies $31.00
The full assortment Navy gift box, Loison Dolci Pensieri, Makabi & Sons Oaxaca and Uji, plus biscotti and brownies $49.00

Prices follow the listed price on each product page; the home-baked cookies are extra. For a gift to make by the dozen, Christmas gifts for neighbors has smaller ideas.

Short answers

What cookies are good for a cookie gift box? Firm, flat cookies: biscotti, brownies and bars, and plain drop cookies. FedEx names these as cookies that travel well.

How do you keep cookies from breaking in a box? Cool them fully, wrap or separate them, use parchment partitions, and pack the box tight enough that nothing moves when you shake it.

How far ahead can I bake for a cookie gift box? Colorado State University Extension gives baked cookies 6 to 12 months in the freezer, so bake early, freeze them sealed, and pack the box close to the day it is given.

Can I mix bought and homemade cookies? Yes. Individually wrapped bought cookies are useful for filling gaps between rows.
